i'm that kid

you know when you are with a group of adults and some pre-teen dweeb keeps hanging about trying to get in on the conversation as if they were old enough or as if the adults cared even the tiniest bit about what they had to say? they seem to think that they are an adult or at least on equal footing with the adults.

i am officially that kid. only thing is i am and adult. ok, stop laughing. really, at least in respect to my age, i am an adult. and i am older than some of these people. but you know what? i am not one of them. i don't have my degree, i am a student, and no matter how hard i try i can't blend in. i don't know the secret handshake and they aren't in any rush to show it to me.

i get the occasional "no no we really are interested" glance while they wait patiently for me to get it and move on.

so i am off to the venture reading/reception tonight where i will exist uncomfortably between the students and faculty and then slink out afterwards.

most days it isn't this hard to be the "adult student" today it feels like too much work.

I think you underestimate yourself. Seriously. You are a force of nature, and way brighter than you ever give yourself credit for being.

Michelle,

I have seen you in social settings with adults, and you always seem to be the center of attention. If fact, it seems that one has to wait in line for their turn to talk to you.

Isn't it funny how different things look from the outside?

One always views oneself differently from their own vantage point --- myself --- I am that person amongst the "got-it-together" Moms in my community. I fit in much better at home - and yes quite well at work where I know who I am, and know where my place is, and even perhaps the most important thing - I know who everyone else "really" is - not my perception of them ~ ~ ~ ~
~ ~ ~ could it be your perception alone thats telling you these people are "better" or "more intellectual" than you?
Not to mention ~ you have a keener wit than anyone I have ever known! Love you!
