Moral Disorder by Margaret Atwood
Moral Disorder by Margaret Atwood is a series of short stories that revolve around the life of a woman during various times of her life. The stories are not told in chronological order - the protagonist is first an old woman, then an 11-year-old girl, and then the stories are more or less chronological in order, with some exceptions.
Margaret Atwood is an excellent storyteller, and she does a marvelous job of creating characters and scenes. Overall, though, I did not find Moral Disorder to be compelling. One thing that bothered me was that the protagonist initially tells the stories in the first person, but about halfway through the book the stories are told in the third person (and she who was previously the narrator is, finally, given a name), and near the end the perspective shifts back to the first person. From a reader's standpoint, I found the shifting perspective to be annoying. I also disliked the fact that some of the stories referred to characters whe could have been interesting but who never actually appeared in the stories (a brother, a daughter) and other stories had characters whose stories stopped abruptly (whatever happened to Tig's sons once they became adults?). I also found the narrator to be something of a passive participant in her own life at times - I could never feel empathy for this person, because she didn't seem to be all that involved in the events of her own life. Finally, while some of the stories were engrossing, many of the others were not, especially at the end; it took me a while to make myself sit down and finish reading this book.
Moral Disorder has its moments, and it features scenes and characters that have been developed by an excellent author. But be forewarned that it's inconsistent, and not entirely satisfying.
