Test by William Sleator
Test, by William Sleator, is a YA book set in the future. Like The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster (which is mentioned in Test) or the film Metropolis, Test foresees a future with a huge class divide between the Haves and the Have Nots. In Test, high school seniors Ann and Lep are studying for the exam which will determine whether they can graduate, and have a chance at a more comfortable future, or be consigned to living their lives in squalor and pollution. Ann and Lep become entwined in a battle with powerful people who have the power to control their futures.
For the most part, I found that this was a well-written and interesting story. However, it ultimately felt like a story with an interesting premise that the author didn't quite know how to end. It finished up somewhat abruptly, with an ending that felt tacked on.
I'd recommend this as an age-appropriate YA book that opens up avenues of discussion about class structure and educational issues such as teaching to the test. However, the recommendation is not without reservation, simply because it is not as written as thoroughly or satisfyingly as it should have been.
