Keeping Score by Linda Sue Park

At the ALA Midwinter Conference, one of my friends told me that I should pick up Keeping Score by Linda Sue Park because it was about baseball. I'm grateful for the suggestion.

This isn't just about baseball. But author Linda Sue Park (Newbery Medalist for A Single Shard) has written a wonderful story for 9- through 12-year-olds.

Maggie is a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in the 1950s, but her favorite ballplayer is Willie Mays of the Giants. She learns to keep a scorecard from firefighter Jim, who is later drafted to serve in Korea. The timeline of the book is 1951-1955. Baseball fans will immediately realize the importance of these years in New York baseball history. Since I am the descendant of Brooklyn Dodgers fans, the events in this book are the history that I grew up hearing about. That is also why the epilogue gave me goosebumps, even though I don't expect that reaction for most readers.

It is worthy of mention that my son recently read A Single Shard in middle school, and he was not enamored of the story. However, Keeping Score is something that my baseball-loving boy will be able to identify with and enjoy. Any baseball fan, especially in the New York area, will enjoy this story.
