The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, by Joshilyn Jackson
Joshilyn Jackson's The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is the story of a suburban housewife, Laurel, who is awakened one night by the ghost of a girl who has just drowned in her swimming pool. Like the quilts that our protagonist designs, the story unfolds in layers, until we eventually learn what happened on that fateful night. In the meantime, Laurel has to contend with her daughter, who seems to be hiding something, her parents, and her theatrical yet destructive sister.
I enjoyed this book very much, and found it to be a tale well told. It actually took me a while to read it; not due to difficulty, but Jackson's languid and descriptive writing style created a tone that made me want to take my time and really get to know the characters and what their lives were about. While in some ways this is a simple mystery, The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is more of an examination of why we live the lives that we do.
