The Pirates of Turtle Rock by Richard W. Jennings

The Pirates of Turtle Rock by Richard W. Jennings is a tale for readers age 10 and above. Its cast of characters include an 18-year-old pirate, a 16-year-old South Floridian girl, an absent-minded professor and some bumbling pirates. There's the obligatory treasure map and some mild romantic scenes.

I'm not entirely sure who would be the ideal audience for this book. Young boys would like the pirate elements of the plot, but might be turned off by the romance; similarly, I'm simply unsure how many girls would find the pirate story line to be compelling. The story is light - it's pleasure reading, rather than academic in nature.

Although The Pirates of Turtle Rock is a pleasant read, I'd say that it's most appropriate for kids who are drawn to pirate stories in general and who don't mind a little romance thrown in for good measure.
