The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread by Don Robertson

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread by Don Robertson is considered to be an American classic. It was written in 1965 and set in 1944 Cleveland, and it tells the story of Morris Bird III during the East Ohio Gas Explosions of 1944.

Although this is well regarded, I just could not get into this book. It's YA subject matter but it's not written in a style that fits with current YA standards and expectations, and I couldn't get past how dated a lot of the references were (a 9-year-old who loves Veronica Lake is simply beyond anything that I can relate to).

Recently, a friend of mine said that, "Life is too short for bad books." This book isn't necessarily bad, but it's not the right fit for me. I'd recommend it for fans of older American classics or for historical fiction set in the midwest. But this isn't easy reading, and one should look over Robertson's writing style before purchasing this book.
