People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

I received People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks as a graduation gift. It's a fictionalized history of what might have led to the creation of the Sarajevo Haggadah. The book is told from the perspective of fictional Australian conservator Hannah Heath, from her travel to Bosnia to inspect the recently discovered haggadah, and Hannah's story is interspersed with the stories of people in different places and times who had significant dealings with the codex.

In some ways this is reminiscent of The Da Vinci Code, except that the character's adventures are much less far-fetched and the overall story pays more accurate homage to history. I found this to be interesting, informative and well written; People of the Book is digestible and handles serious issues sensitively and accessibly.
