Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty by Jody Gehrman

My confession is that I picked up Jody Gehrman's Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty because I couldn't resist the picture of that latte on the book's cover. I sat down with this, expecting it to be a typical YA novel, but in short order I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually an updated (and not hugely disguised) version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The age recommendation is for readers age 14 and up; this is appropriate due to some of the subject matter in the book (teen sex, alcohol and drug use).

The Bard would have approved of this modern re-telling of his classic story -- it's entertaining, and it makes his story relevant to a new generation of readers. This is a great introduction to a Shakespearean tale for readers who may not be ready to tackle the challenges of reading the original play just yet.
