Bleeding Kansas, by Sara Paretsky
I have been a fan of Sara Paretsky's for many years, and I have read every one of her V.I. Warshawski mysteries. Bleeding Kansas is a departure from that series - it's a story set in a small town outside of Lawrence, Kansas, which is where Ms. Paretsky grew up. Bleeding Kansas is a complex story involving many characters including Wiccans, Born Again Christians, farmers and teenagers, with subplots including the peace movement, the war in Iraq, and family struggles and interactions. As always, Ms. Paretsky creates complex characters who are not purely good or purely evil (with a couple of glaring exceptions), and she tells her story in a way that allows us to respect her characters' motivations, even when we disagree with their actions. The book doesn't conclude with a Hollywood-style happy ending, which would have been condescending to the reader, but it is not morose or hopeless either. Thus, I found Bleeding Kansas to be a well told story by one of the best storytellers of our day.
