Confused
Ever have one of those "what have I gotten into?" situations?
I'm singing with this new "Contemporary Choir" in my church.
I love it.
I have missed singing, I love the music, I feel at peace with God when I am singing, I enjoy the friends and fellowship, and oh ... we sound good.
...and if last Sunday is any gauge - (the congregation was blessed and very moved by the song) - I think we are fullfilling a purpose.
Problem is:

These "choir members" are older folk, whom I like and respect. Some of our contemporary choir members were formerly members of the regular choir, left for one reason or another, and have now joined us. We actually now outnumber them. so....
There is undercurrent, hurt feelings and concern.
There is some talk that we may (and even should) replace "the choir". This was never my intention, in fact the only reasons I did not join the regular choir is because I work on their rehearsal nights, and I can't sing every Sunday.
Is it necessary for me to explain myself to everyone else?
I am not trying to replace or compete with anyone - but people are human, and they will perceive what they will from their own perspective. I don't want to be part of a rift - I JUST WANT TO SING!
So I come home from rehearsal tonight all alive and excited and still singing - and the love of my life spends 10 minutes warning me how this could be trouble and am I ready for it? I know he means well, and as usual he is acting as my conscience, thinking things through and sharing his that I usually don't see, ... but ...
*big sigh*
now I'm not feeling so "alive" anymore. Just unsettled.
Pray for me.

Home again, home again,
jiggitty jig.
That's right! I never made it to work. About 30 minutes into my commute it seems my alternator quit and my car did a slow dwindle .... dwindle ... stop.
Thankful for AAA, not thankful to the cold weather, thankful for the real estate person who allowed me to use their bathroom (after waiting in the cold for one hour), and now thankful to the Ford dealer in town for fixing my car so quickly (if not inexpensively) so that I am today going to be able to attempt to go to work once more.
That is ... after curves ... after my errands, my volunteer work in someone's classroom and the "5th grade movin' up day" meeting at noon.

Don't you just LOVE snow?
Snowed all night and still snowing(7:00am). The deer have been busy through the night as you can see they visited our bird feeders early this morning;

You can see across the back, behind the bluebird house(upper left), the usual deer trail (it's that one narrow line that arcs across the corner of the photo). They went through there last night before we went to bed, and that trail will get well-worn over the next few days. But this morining, it appears they were interested in the bird seed.

The snow-covered basin had some cracked corn in it for them a few days ago, but I think it was all gone before the snow, anyway, I don't think they could have gotten down to the bottom.
I'll post more photos of the snow in the gallery (view from my window) later today ... 'cause ... it's a SNOW DAY!

Quite a suprise as it's not even snowing yet!
But I'm not complaining.
Once I do get home (which will be quite a while I'm sure) LET IT SNOW!

Can we please have the actual forcast? This "not-knowing" stuff is just not acceptable! Sitting here at work - do we cancel night school - do we not?? In the meantime someones after-school-care program has been cancelled, I'm an hour away and I can't reach someones dad!!!

Grrrr...
Some employers don't know how to treat their hard-working employees....
.. then again, some managers don't know how to stand up for their staff, or to talk to their staff when they have to pass on a directive... (no, I'm not better than anyone else, I'm just sensitive to my staff's feelings, and not afraid of the boss)
HELLO!! it's called "middle management" and it requires some understanding of your people, and some finesse!
So the people get hurt, the morale goes down the chute - and we all suffer!
Not my department, and I'm not supposed to get involved - (ha ha) watch me!

Exactly the reason I left my last job! No say in what upper management wanted done, yet expected to pass along directives (most of which make no sense whatsoever, and would be changed back several months down the road . . . ) as if we were in complete support of them! It's okay - eventually every dog has her day - a previous boss just turned 50 and someone close to her decided to do one of those tacky billboard things with "guess who's turning 50?" with a very, very bad picture of her along one of the main roads in town . . . every time I see it I smile . . .
It is wise to apply the oil of refined politeness to the mechanisms of friendship.
Morality by consensus is frequently morality by convenience.

* Finally got the Christmas "stuff" put away yesterday, so a productive weekend!
* Relatively low-stress morning as someone got herself together and out to the bus with very few "hurry up!" reminders
* Hate sending my husband out to work in this 9 degree (wind chill of -8) weather
* Slept a little late so I didn't start my day with exercise
* Not feeling rested, as I didn't get much sleep - - -

I kept finding myself in strange places and not knowing how I got there - lost - no one could come help me -
Next Dream: Got lost driving to my step-daughters for Thanksgiving dinner only to find that the entire family - including my husband and daughter were at MY house. Next Dream: found myself at Newark Airport, unable to find my car or my purse and when I called home my husband said he couldn't come get me because the turkey was about to come out of the oven and they were eating in 10 minutes - how could he leave a house full of company on Thanksgiving? (he's really not like that) tried to call again, got my mother on the phone (who was a little more understanding, - what does that mean?,) - but my cell phone went dead!

Toasted Grinders
Well, we'll call it a visit, and a nice one.
After arrival we were immediately ushered into the car to go "out to lunch". "We found this great place"
Went to a little pizza/grinder shop on the water. "we hope you like this place" Excellent New England toasted grinders - but then, we know that because we know this grinder-spot well, we stop there every year after our RI camping trip. Now, the fact that it is 10-minutes from his brother's house is a problem, because we don't stop to visit them when we go through town.
So..... trying desperately to "mouth" to the 11-year old daughter "Don't say that we've been here before" yikkessss! They say I hope they have something you like (of course they do , she knows that!) She did OK though
Then we went on a trip "down memory lane" to all the "old spots" the old house of course the MiJoy - (long story).
Then to Moheghan Sun casino ---- just to look around and get ice cream ....
and then home (first dinner) then finally got to the paper work.
It did go well, (although it has not been fully decided what to do with the stocks and mutual funds), there were no arguments or even disagreements. We could be on our way to finalizing this estate.

We are off to CT for the day to visit my husbands brother. The real purpose of the visit is to make the final decisions and sign the last few papers to settle my father-in-laws estate. Sitting on the living room floor in our upstairs apartment, my mother standing at the ironing board (in her yellow gingham house dress with the self-fabric belt), "sprinkling" the laundry from the ceramic bottle with the aluminum sprinkle top.
I'm watching Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans. The "magic drawing board" is drawing images of a boy and a dragon while we listen to "Puff the Magic Dragon" (a new song at the time). I'm singing with the TV, of course, and Captain Kangaroo is as much a part of my day as my pet salamander "Sorry Charlie" (named from the tuna commercial) that we "acquired" on vacation that summer at Highland Lakes.
Sorry ... back to the show:
The show began in 1955 - the year I was born, and it is the TV show I remember "growing up with" more than any other. He had such a kind face and a gentle manner (are their any children's TV personalities like that now after the passing last year of Fred Rogers?) He and Mr. Greenjeans were friends, and made an impression on my life, and will be missed.

Ok, don't want to gush and brag ... but my daughter wrote an essay for school, just a homework assignment about the different biomes of the earth and how animals adapt to their environments. It was cute and creative. Most of all, she had fun writing it. If you want to read it here it is:

THE POLAR BEAR WHO WANTED TO MOVE TO THE DESERT
Polar Bear: I'm going to move to the desert. It's so boring here in the tundra. All I do is fish eat and sleep. In the desert I heard its always warm and I don't have to put up with all this snow. I may not even have to hibernate!
Jess: No, don't do that polar bear! You are perfect for the tundra!
Polar Bear: What do you mean?
Jess: You have adaptations that help you survive there.
Polar Bear: What's an adaptation?
Jess: It's a certain thing about you're body that is designed especially for your type of body that makes it possible for you to live in the biome you live in.
Polar bear: So why does that stop me from moving to the desert? I just won't need my "adaptations" anymore.
Jess: You don't get it, do you? You're not the only animal that has adaptations! Every animal, including humans, have them. Everyone needs them to live were they live. So you just can't move to the desert, because you have the wrong adaptations!
Polar bear: Why does that stop me? I will learn the adaptations of the desert animals.
Jess: Polar bear, you can't just learn adaptations! Most of you're adaptations are structural, which means there part of you're body! So you really couldn't survive a day in the desert! The desert animals are mostly nocturnal. They can store water in their body or go days without it. You see water is very rare in the desert and...
Polar bear: But I eat fish, which live in water! Oh me oh my! What will I eat? I may starve!
Jess: You probably would! And even if you did have food, you'd die of heat before you even got to eat it! The desert isn't just warm like you said earlier, Its boiling HOT!
Polar bear: But then how do the desert animals survive?
Jess: They have thin fur. And may I remind you that you certainly don't have thin fur! You have thick fur, and a layer of fat under you're skin! That fat traps heat to keep you warm in the tundra but it certainly won't help you in the desert! Polar Bear, you were meant for the tundra! You have A small tail and small ears. Do you know why?
Polar bear: No.
Jess: The small size reduces the amount of body heat you lose as your blood flows to them, keeping them, and you, warmer.
Also, the fat layer I was telling you about, that is under your fur and skin. It really helps to keep you warm in the winter. Your thick fur insulates and protects you from the freezing temperatures. But do you Know what else it protects you from? The Water! Your fur is waterproof and unlike human hair, doesn't get wet! The water just drips off! That's because if it did get wet, you're hair would just freeze off! The last adaptation that you have is the way you're paws are hairy. That makes it possible for you're feet to stay warm while also giving you traction so you don't break the ice. So Polar bear, you really are meant for the tundra! What do you think about moving now?
Polar bear: I think it was a silly thought. I would never last a day in that awful desert! And I like the tundra better anyway, know that you made me realize how good I am at living in it. So, Jessica, you were right! And thanks to you I will never, ever think of moving anywhere else again, although this week I heard the rainforest is a lovely place?
Jess: Polar Bear, don't you even think about it!
Polar bear: All right, all right, I was just joking, anyway.
THE END

Loves and Hates
We all love special things and moments that probably mean nothing to other people - but what we love and hate defines us and makes us unique.
I admit, I love falling asleep on the couch under an afghan
I love movies with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan
I love Peach Iced Tea (Crystal Light)
I love Pentel Hybrid Gel pens (Red, Blue and Black) - don't touch mine!
I love my stairs in my foyer
I love watching snow fall at night and listening to the silence of it
I love Dunkin' Donuts coffee
I love Jan Karon books - The Mitford Series
I love Edy's Espresso Chip Ice Cream
I love when my daughter whispers "I love you mommy" as I adjust her covers at midnight
I hate waking up on the couch and finding that it's 2 am
I hate being cold (and I am every night after 10 pm)
I hate having to wear glasses to read anything and everything anymore!!!
I hate that people I love very much have died - and I still miss them daily
I hate that I have to work full-time, even though I like my job
I hate waiting for my computer to load a page (I need a new computer!)
I hate waiting for anything!
I hate not having time to spend with friends
I hate chalk on a blackboard
I hate being unsure of myself (and I always am)
Can you relate? Can you list ten of each? Five?
Saturday and Silliness
OK Now that it's the weekend, it's time for just fun ... no stress OK?
So, this was not what I expected:

blue stocking?
If you consider yourself a "blue stocking" ie "a literary woman" and you don't have a copy of the Bas Bleu catalog go here:
http://www.basbleu.com
and get one! Or check out their on-line catalog.
(If you don't know what a blue stocking is ... there is an on-line explanation)
Anyway, the great thing is that each of the books in the catalog is accompanied by a review ... (you can even write your own review) ... which gives you enough reason to want to order most of the books listed!
I've found lots of gift ideas for the special people in my life who love books (yes you).

Swiped this from Michelle
I could have used my name, but this gives me a higher score:~\
I love SCRABBLE! I'm currently playing an on-line game with my mother and my sisters. Go here and set yourself up with a game!

My scrabble score is 28! Now what does a higher score mean???? At least you have some neat animals in your back yard - all I keep finding are dead 'possums, which I feel bad about but I'll guess not quite as bad as the 'possum.

Time to stop and smell the roses
... or the coffee! An underrated pleasure. 15 free minutes, a cup of fresh coffee (in my new Longaberger mug) with half-and-half and a quiet house.

Noticing nature this morning. A quick walk out for the bus and we counted all the tracks we could find in the dusting of snow that came (again) last night. I love the wonder of who's about at night, or early morning while we sleep and the snow gives us a chance to find out!
Want to know what we found?

At least four deer crossed the driveway and continued across the front lawn.
Two cats (one large, one small), all along the driveway, and up by the garage (our cat stays indoors). Birds tracks (dangerously close to the cats), a mouse or a mole traces from one side of the driveway to the other at the end by the stone wall.
A rabbit came out of the brush and up to the road.
This is one of very few reasons I love the winter! I may go out in the back by the stream to see what else I can find!

"2 Hour Delay"
Aaaggghhhh.... I hate this one!
Two hours here makes me three hours late for work.
I know, the roads are dusted with snow, and it's very cold making them icy and dangerous .. but hey ... open up and I'll drive my child the 3 minutes to the school and then I CAN GO TO WORK!
OK, new plan - get off the ocmputer and go exercise with that guy on the beach in Hawaii

Okay - at least you've got snow - which makes the cold worthwhile. We just have cold. Now I've been to your website again - see some of us learn to not stress about doing everything - we save certain things for when we have time . . . (see what good "de-stressing" drugs can do for you!?) As for the tarot card thing - don't know about yours but I'm thinking they may have pegged me pretty well: Queen of Cups:
WATER OF WATER. Pretty lady! Fair and gentle, your empathy attracts others to you. Possibly psychic, you are pure emotion and are more likely to act on feeling rather than practical thought or logic. You think that's just fine because imagination is important. You are the Whore of Babylon with her cup of abominable things, the Medium of Endor and in the mundane world you usually make a good wife and mother. You shine when you are able to give emotional support to others.

ahhh.. Sunday
A far, far better day it is!
Our church service today was led by our Confirmation class, and in addition to leading the service they each took an opportunity to get up and share their personal faith with the congregation! We were all more that once brought to tears! What great teens we have in this church! Super kids, and one of them is our babysitter!
The confirmation class had asked "our" class (the younger girls one of which is mine) to sing in the service. So the three of them who were here J, Em, and "little Jess", stood up in front of the congregation and sang "Our God Is An Awsome God" acapella - brought the congregation almost to their feet! No fear, and three sweet, strong voices! Way to go girls! (the moms & dads were bursting their buttons)
Did I mention that I started rehearsing with the contemporary choir?

They have been inviting me, but they usually rehearse on a night I work, now it has been moved to Friday nights (not going over too well at home yet) and I went this past Friday. A great group of women, fun to be with. Our first song will be on Jan 25th. It feels good to be a part of a choir again. Of course, the finished product will tell the tale. Wish me luck.

Give me a break
Please ... it's a weekend, weekends are supposed to be stress free!!!
It's just one of those days around here where everyone is "at" everyone else. Or maybe it's me being psycho-stress-mom again. At least that's what they tell me the problem is, it's just that I wouldn't be stressed if I didn't have all this stuff to stress about ... kinda like the chicken and the egg I guess.
Anyway, on the way driving my darling daughter to her sleepover party this afternoon she was singing the song from Nemo - "Just keep stressing, just keep stressing ... What do we do? we just keep stressing" She makes me laugh that kid, and this time - out loud, which, well was a good thing.
(I think this family needs serious counseling)

I am not a feminist ... but ...
Set up a new home page at work MSN ... so as content, in addition to news, weather, local news and health, I pick MSN women ...
What do I get?
* Get the perfect shoe fit
* Know the rules for eye makeup
* Top 10 myths about marriage
Do they think all women are total gits!?!
How about a discussion on the risk factors of HRT?, or maybe stress management?, or perhaps career options?, a list of recommended novels?
For crying out loud! I don't have time to put on my eye make up, let alone read the "rules".
Now deleting this useless home page content. Someone send me a useful link for busy, intelligent women please!

Here we go ...
Save me someone, I'm crashing again.
Too much to do
it's getting late
not enough time
can't find the piano book
no one is moving fast enough for me
the cat threw up on the rug
I am snapping
I am stressing
I am psycho-stress-mom-from-Hell again!
kiss them good-bye (did I do that with attitude?? - Sorry!)
What I want to do is sit here with my coffee (Oh, that's what I need more caffeine) and do nothing -
What I will do is go back to tackle the laundry, clean the rug, take out the garbage, try to organize this stack of papers, clean up the kitchen, pick up socks - and then - I'll go work out.

Breathe...breathe...breathe...NO! That's for when you are in labor, sorry. Hint: the cat puke sometimes cleans up easier AFTER it dries onto the rug. Have another cup of coffee, chill, relax. This too shall pass sweetie. Go look for the new friend that your fortune cookie predicted yesterday.
Will you be my friend?
OK, I'm better now, now it's just stressing to get out the door to work!
Of COURSE I will be your friend! I would even clean up your cat puke (I am very used to it - have 2 cats - considered an expert in the field of cat puke and droppings)..that's what friends are for. Half a box of Godiva chocolates in my office if you are interested - that helps ANYONE's day!
where are your bon bons when you need them?
hope it got better this afternoon...
It got better, thanks. My forturne cookie reads
"A lifetime friend shall soon be made"
I've got lots of them apparently
anyway ... at work there were LOTS of bonbons ... still are today!!! Everyone is cleaning out their homes from Christmas evils ... and bringing them here.

WATER OF EARTH. Mommy! Well, you could be. You are good with plants and small creatures such as children. You're very generous and basically great hearted. You probably make mad whack cookies and are good at managing the household; also businesses. You'd make a good tax person, book keeper, gardener, massage therapist, etc. The ever domestic and practical one, you can stretch a penny and make ramen noodles go a long way. |

A difficult morning
Went to the attorney's office this morning. Estate stuff for M's Dad. still...
It's harder than it should be, it is more emotional when you're accross the desk from this man who is making a "business arrangement" out of your father's life work. All those investments that Dad was so proud of . . . become $$ figures and decisions. The home that he was so proud of ...
But it is impossible to separate your emotions when you are on this side of that desk.
My heart was breaking for my husband who at moments appeared to be a bewildered child in the midst of piles of papers, and at other times was a decisive proud man (like his dad?) who staunchly refused all suggestions of any personal gain.
I love this man because:

I did it ..
Ok ... we did it, although my husband says "I didn't do anything, you did it all"
Pulled off a small social gathering of friends with ease and elegance. "Afternoon tea" if you will, all quite benign - no rum in the eggnog. Entirely the over-70 crowd of neighbors - some piano playing and singing, devoured the last tray of Christmas cookies and everyone left saying "This was a wonderful time"
(This coming from neighbors who all but gave us the "cold shoulder" a month ago - which concerned us, hence these plans).
Whew .... was I Mary Bailey again for a brief afternoon?
Tomorrow I will be psycho-stress-mom-from-hell again as we resume our normal routine.

It's almost over
A day (or two) left, and it is officially no longer the holidays.
I have one more small gathering tomorrow afternoon. Of course this one involves meticulous house cleaning, as this is not family, it's neighbors (whose floor you could eat off any day - any time). So now I must play the ruse that I too keep an immaculate house!
The up side is, that when they leave tomorrow afternoon, my house (at least the first floor) will still be clean and I can start the week that way. (By the way - no one goes upstairs - our story will be that the stairs are unsafe, and we have to have them checked for stability).

New Year - New Dog?
New Years Resolution:
A new pet!! (no, not yet!)
We have been arguing for the past year about what type of dog to get. The arguments has gone like this Golden Retreiver / German Shepherd (repeat over and over).
Well, Tuesday night we saw one of these, and all three of us fell in love:

Bernese Mountain Dog
If you know us well, and know our family dog history - you will see why we love this dog. Since Tuesday we have done tons of web research, and come up with several local breeders. We are going to send out some e-mails to see if anyone will have spring puppies. We have taken two on-line surveys to see if this dog is compatible with our family and it seems to be a "yes"
Wish us luck in our search!

Tomorrow is back to work for a short day (who wants to come to therapy on what for most people is probably a 4 day weekend?). Nice holidays. All is well.
