The passing of a legend - well, at least to me.
Captain Kangaroo Dies

This was my childhood.
I remember:

Sitting on the living room floor in our upstairs apartment, my mother standing at the ironing board (in her yellow gingham house dress with the self-fabric belt), "sprinkling" the laundry from the ceramic bottle with the aluminum sprinkle top.
I'm watching Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans. The "magic drawing board" is drawing images of a boy and a dragon while we listen to "Puff the Magic Dragon" (a new song at the time). I'm singing with the TV, of course, and Captain Kangaroo is as much a part of my day as my pet salamander "Sorry Charlie" (named from the tuna commercial) that we "acquired" on vacation that summer at Highland Lakes.
Sorry ... back to the show:
The show began in 1955 - the year I was born, and it is the TV show I remember "growing up with" more than any other. He had such a kind face and a gentle manner (are their any children's TV personalities like that now after the passing last year of Fred Rogers?) He and Mr. Greenjeans were friends, and made an impression on my life, and will be missed.
Michelle found a great site with lots of memories here whether you remember him in B&W or color!

I was sad when I heard this yesterday - and also surprised at how young he was - he always seemed so old! What I think is strange though, is that in all the talk I heard on the radio about his death - no one ever said his real name - it was "Captain Kangaroo died", not "Mr. so and so, who played Captain Kangaroo . . " I don't even know his real name!
Anyway - why does this make you Aunt Elaine (and what will Aunt Elaine think if she reads this?)
I also remenber you guys watching Captain Kangaroo.
Carolyn & I sat and watched the very first show.
By the way Jeannette..His 'Real Name" was Bob Keesham
I also knew his real name and have fond memories of his show although my memories are not as VIVID as Nancy's, i.e. the dress and the salamander, hence the reason she thinks she is turning into Aunt Elaine with the excellent memory for detail. Carolyn
