NY Mets 2006 NL East Champions!!
I believe in the church of baseball. I've tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones.I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic's rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball. And it's never boring, which makes it like sex...It's a long season and you gotta trust it. I've tried them all, I really have, and the only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball - Annie Savoy Bull Durham

trick or treat
Pictures are up. We had a perfect night, possibly even a bit warm, for trick or treating. We opted to head up our new street and were surprised when we found the whole street lit up and everyone trick or treating, something you don't see around here too often. All the neighbors were out on their porches handing out candy and being social. The leaves were crunching underfoot, kids were laughing and screaming at the scary decorations. Our new house? They were home but the lights were out and there was no candy to be had there. Tsk tsk tsk.

Fall in the park
Besides the rain early on that cancelled baseball, the weekend was actually cool, crisp and very Autumn-like. We went for pumpkins, went bowling and took the dogs for many walks past the new house.
Don't worry. We're not stalking. No one was home and we were just enjoying looking at the real estate sign that no longer says "For Sale" but now swings in the Fall breeze and reads "Under Contract."
This pic is actually from last weekend when we took the boys and pups to the park with the dog park. I just got a few more posted. It's been too long since I posted a pic of the pups. I still need to take one of them in their glow-in-the-dark halloween t-shirts.
Today is obviously the day before Halloween. Ways that you can tell this?:
Back to sewing up a jedi costume.

dumpster! Woohoo! Of course, this means that my day of reading and a few small household odds and ends is shot. It's all junk, all day.
I am thinking that this will help with my territorial issues I mentioned yesterday. C'mon, who doesn't want a neighbor with a ginormous dumpster?

The highlight of the game (and we're still counting...)
We had a fun time at the game (despite the Mets!). The stadium is beautiful and it was a perfect, crisp, clear night for a game.
Somehow the crazies always find us and it was no different Saturday. The local trailer park association must have given away a set of tickets at their last "Drink and Belch" contest. I won't get into details except to say that one of the younger women was willing to get into a fight with Sparky and I am sure she could have taken him!
The boys were excited to get a batting practice ball. It's one of David Wright's hits. Oliver Perez reached up and handed it to them. Good thing we got that because the Mets did not realize it was my birthday and that they were supposed to clinch.
No problem, we thought. They'll just do it on Sunday for our Anniversary. (Yes, we got married the day after my birthday.) But no...damn Mets aren't getting the message. We were ready. We had pizza, and beer, and cake.
Tonight guys, ok? Or we are going to have a long talk and you are going to have to go to your rooms and think about what you have done.
Otherwise, we had a great weekend. Sparky came through with the stressfree birthday/anniversary. The kids were great for the 10 hour round trip ride. Pittsburgh is very cool and we wish we had more time there. And my family and friends came over to hang out, eat cake and sit around the fire for a bit last night for my birthday.
So, a good weekend, despite the Mets. And the magic number is still one......

A crummy camera-phone picture (again!). One of these days I will remember to take pictures. The guys played hard and improved so much but they came away from the tournament 0-4. Still, they are playing better than they have ever played and are looking forward to the Fall Ball season.

one tired catcher
Wiped out after a big double header!
Poor little guy played 12 innings--caught 6, 3rd for 2, LF for 2, pitched for 2. The guys played fantastic ball but were just outmatched and in the last inning they were just exhausted. C didn't pitch until the last two innings--after he had already caught all those others.
He crushed the ball once in each game and got the bat on the ball 5 out of 6 times at bat. He drove in some runs and stole home to score.
Good games but a long morning and we go one more tomorrow.

My very first entry for Photo Friday
What better circle could there be. No, this isn't the most artistic photo. But it is a circle and it let's me squeeee a little that the Mets are 30 games over .500, 14.5 games in first place, just swept their second series in a row, won their 11th home game in a row and won their 7th game in a row. It's a good time to be Mets' fan.
And that....that is an excellent circle!!

Camping
We're on our way out to the aquarium this morning which means, of course, that I needed to clean out the memory stick on the camera. What you get, lucky readers, is many photos from camping, the shore, baseball and I am pretty sure, the last aquarium trip.
This is my favorite from camping. Looking at this you might even believe these are well-behaved kids who don't drive their mother to drink :)

His first pre-game lineup
The first game of the tournament our township is hosting and they had all the boys run out as their names were announced and then stand for the National Anthem. You don't see this a lot with the little guys. They usually save the pomp and circumstance for the older teams.
So yeah, I teared up a bit. But c'mon, how cute are they?

C gave Mookie a baseball card. When Mookie said that he was sorry but he could only sign the posters today, C told him:
"No. I brought this as a present for you. It's my baseball card and I signed it for you."
Mookie got an enormous smile on his face, checked C's stats, told him it was the coolest gift ever and said, "Wow! A catcher!"
C was very, very proud. And, of course, walked away with Mookie's autograph (as well as Sid Fernandez and Darryl Strawberry's!)

Summer Things
It has been brought to my attention that I have been slacking with photos.
To make up for this I give you what amounts to random bullets in the photo version.

Now pitching for CWC....
We thought that C wouldn't pitch until Saturday but our starting pitcher didn't tell us that he fractured his foot. So C was in in the second inning and I was a nervous wreck.
No need to worry. While we won't be tallying his ERA in the near future, I was very, very proud of his attitude. He walked 9 in two innings, gave up only two hits and hit one batter. He shook it off and kept on going.
It was the umps first time (he was only 14!) and he had a teeny, tiny strike zone and the other team was looking to walk. C actually pitched pretty well and felt good.
Trouble is that when he wasn't pitching he was catching so the poor kid threw the equivalent of 129 pitches! Eek!
He came home and told us that while he wasn't Pedro, maybe he was like Bannister and that was ok too.
He's a champ and I'm proud of him. I would have given up.
Also--1 for 2 with a single.

The best way to do homework
Spent the afternoon yesterday sitting out in the sun reading Dracula for class and taking a few pics. The campus was almost in full bloom. Next week should be even more gorgeous.
Glad I soaked in some sunshine before the wet weekend.
Poor C was supposed to have opening day for Little League tomorrow.

J's Birthday trip to DC
We had a great trip to DC. The boys were really good and enjoyed their new bean mp3 players which meant that we had fewer arguments and a more interesting selection of driving music than usual.
It was raining and dreary when we arrived and we were scooted out of the evolution movie by a scary, cranky woman who said the museum closed at 5:30 even though the banner outside clearly said 7:30. Luckily Sparky didn't allow me to vent at her (or the annoying woman at the world's largest mcdonald's) so I wasn't arrested.
J enjoyed celebrating his b-day on the road complete with a krueller with a candle.
The pups did well on their first hotel stay and we got to meet up with friends that live too far away.
I even tried to slip in a little educational fun.
me: Hey C. What monument is this?
C: The Jefferson memorial
me: Yup. Do you know who he was?
C: ummm. The guy who invented the lightbulb?
me: We may have some work to do here.
He did know Lincoln. That's a start, right?

Remember that good news I mentioned a few days back?
After long talks and very difficult decisions we have a new family member. We were interested in two puppies and it was so hard not to just say yes to both. I still feel sad saying no to the other. He was absolutely adorable. But in the end we thought that she would be the best fit.
Her name is Shea (yup, like the stadium) and she is half Jack Russell and half Rat terrier. She is 9 weeks old and weighs 3.9 pounds. Roxie is adjusting pretty well. It only took about a half an hour before they were snuggled up on the couch.
She moves quick so getting a clear picture is a challenge but there are more over on Flickr.

while we were sleeping
we were all snuggled up in comfy flannel sheets and warm blankets and woke up to snow! real snow.
i thought we would absolutely be on the rain/snow line--this is fairly typical for this aread--and wind up with a little slushy sludge. but no! snow!
and you know what's really fun about this? we are headed out to buy a tree this morning.

that's the response we still get when we mention our latest furry friends. but we were just at the pet store picking up cat litter, rat litter, crickets and fish food and there were teeny-tiny baby rats looking so cute in the window. the girl in the back took them out to let j hold them. i swear, i am only a few steps away from becoming that crazy old woman who just lives in a house with books and pets.
anyway, i find it telling that the people that have to deal with the small, furry, mammal sections at pet stores always love the rats. know which furry creature they have at home? they have rats.
you know why? 'cause they are damn cute.

trick or treaters
mine plus one. j was a pirate (doing his part to stop global warming!), c was a ghoul (complete with a limp although his leg is much better tonight...), and c's buddy m joined us for a little panhandling trick or treating.

stowaway!!!
Eek! This is what I was greeted by when I got back in the car after lunch! On my windshied! And yes, he is on the inside!!!
In an effort not to squeal like a little girl while jumping and running from the car I:
1)took his picture and sent it to my blog (of course!)
2) found a chuck-e-cheese token cup in the car and trapped him under it
3)realized that chuck-e-cheese token cups have holes in the bottom so you can't use them for soda or apparently for trapping humunguous spiders
4) stuck receipt under the cup and flung the door open throwing chuck-e-cheese, receipt, and spider out into the lot
5) apologized to the woman next to me for banging her car with my door. no worries though as she was laughing her ass off at me.

is it spring yet?? baseball seems an eternity away tonight. 67 days 'til pitchers and catchers...not that i'm counting.
