Because I love you...yes, you....
It's that time of year again. Sure, it's Easter/Ostara but more importantly..
it's time for the annual link to the Peep Research and Surgery site.
Read how there brave and pioneering physicians fight to separate the conjoined peeps, how they battle to resuscitate them and give them a normal peep life. Also, read how they see if they melt in various toxic liquids.
Fun for the whole family :)
Happy Peep Season!!

Finally
someone gives me the explanation I've been looking for.
Anyways, thats not what this post is about. I was thinking about kids toys. And Santa. And I was wondering why we have to buy our kids toys when Santa is going to be giving them what they want anyways.
It bothered me for a while. But I think I have it all figured out now. So, Ill share my theory with you.
...
In the olden days Santa would have just given these bad kids lumps of coal. But coal is very expensive now. So he doesnt want to waste his money. Especially since he has to pay the Elves minimum wage. And give them a day off each year. All due to them Unionizing and demanding better pay and working conditions. Ungrateful Elves..
...
One group of Elves make good quality toys for the good kids. These toys have all their parts. And they come fully assembled. They even come with batteries installed. And Santa delivers these toys himself on Christmas Eve.
The other group makes toys for the bad kids. These are the toys they put in the stores for parents to buy. The toys that require assembly. That have no batteries installed. The ones with all the missing parts and no instructions.
Please go on over to Happy and Blue 2 and read the rest. Great blog if you haven't popped in before. Go on, it's better than wrapping and cleaning.

Because shopping by yourself is never as much fun...
No, this isn't as good as a cheese canoe, but just take a closer peek at where the spigot is on this festive holiday drink dispenser. Santa is going to have a very, merry xmas and I am not so sure I want any of that.
I was all by myself in the wilds of xmas eve eve eve Target and laughing like a wild woman.
Seriously, who designed this? And although there is no photographic evidence, Frosty was getting in on this action as well.
You'll just have to take my word for it.

I stopped on the side of the road, risking life and limb and whing children, to take this poor quality camera phone picture all so you wouldn't miss out on the joy of an

All I Want For Christmas
Sparky and I aren't doing gifts this year. We are going to be getting plenty of things for the new house and that seems like more than enough.
That said...
this song has been stuck in my head all season. Shut it. I know it's Mariah Carey. I have my pride, honest. But...I went searching for a link to share my holidya music obsession with you and found this:
Mariah Carey - "All I Want for Christmas is You (with Johnny Depp tribute)"
If you are going to hope for something for Christmas who wouldn't wish for Johnny Depp? I am nothing if not generous. So go on and have a look and listen.
If I am going to have this song stuck in my head then at least the visuals now are equally as appealing and maybe I won't be the only one humming this all day.
I know. I know. Mariah Carey. It's ok, really, I have the song stuck in my head from "Love Actually" and that cute little kid sings it in that movie.

Coal
That's what he is getting. Coal. C decided to have a complete "I don't want to take lessons any more. I'm not going." meltdown this morning right at the last minute.
Maybe the band teacher is a pain in the ass. Seems so to me. Maybe he doesn't like lugging a full set of bells back and forth to school when all he really wanted to play was snare. I don't know. But I do know that he wants to quit already and it is breaking my heart.
I managed to send him tearfully to the busstop but I don't know that he is going to keep playing. Maybe I can schedule a conference with the music teacher. Maybe I can cram a drumstick up her butt.
Shouldn't this be more fun?

down to the wire
Santa isn't the only one making a list or doing that double-checking. My lists have sublists and you know this is the last kid free day to accomplish anything.
Except that it isn't. J is home.
What's left on your list? Are you one of those people who are already done and sitting about eating xmas cookies and drinking nog watching the rest of us twirl about in a frenzy?
And I keep gently reminding, definitely not nagging, Sparky that there are only really two days left to get anything done. You know, in case, just by some slim chance, he isn't done the two things he needs to do. Two. uh huh.
OOh, and guess what? We got a new fridge and a dining room table (not those chairs though)last night. Yay! We have access to the new house a week from today.
And a little gift to the Harry Potter fans, in case you haven't heard yet:

Holiday thoughts
Just something to cheer you up in the stress-filled week of craziness:
"Some people are like "slinkies". They're not really good for anything; but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs."
found over at Jill's.
Why yes, it's wrapping day. How did you know? Eh, a few holiday tunes or a good movie and I'll get it all finished by the time the little monsters darling boys are home from school.
Still need to clean and make carrot cakes, gingerbread men, bar cookies, spritz cookies and meringue cookies. Think that'll get finished before Sunday? hahahahahahahahahaha.

Back to reality
We are back from out little getaway. It was good to escape the craziness even for a day or two. We managed some holiday fun that included an indoor water park, battling dragons, the first snow of the season and a xmas tree.
I swear I am still breathing in chlorine but it was well worth it.
This little tree is from the tree decorating contest at the lodge. There were many beautiful trees to vote for but how could I resist this one??

As we go about our holiday decorating
let's take time to remember....
The Cavalcade of Bad Nativities
I almost forgot about this site. Go on, have a look. Procrastinate a bit.
We are not putting much out in the way of decorations this year since we will be packing and moving in January. So we have to decide which are the really important things--which ones are our favorites. I'll take some pics when we get them down but in the meantime...
Which are your favorite holiday decorations? Why? Are they sentimental? Are they beautiful? Are they so kitschy that you can't help but love them? Does it involve a cheese canoe?

Not for me
No. Not for me the police blockaded nastiness, the meanness coralled like livestock, the pushing and shoving for a few dollars off. I took a look only to be turned away by adults sleeping overnight to get the 6 available toys--not for gifts but for themselves.
I will not be included in a crowd of cursing people, shoving and sucking every tiny bit of holiday spirit out of me to save a few pennies. I went and took a look, I did.
How bad could it be, I thought. Bad. Very bad. I will not join the pushing, shoving and swearing. They can have it. It's just things. And there aren't any things I need badly enough to join those people I was just with. Sorry. Not for me.

I am starting off my morning with the parade. The parade. Macy's parade. And we are excited that the balloons have been granted permission to fly.
I am, like every year, crying. There's just something about the parade that gets me every time. Plus, ya gotta love the Macy's parade because it is mummer free and if you've been around here long enough you know of my fear and loathing of the mummers.
Happy Thanksgiving!! It's my favorite holiday. Good food, good company, no stress, no gifts, no pressure.
My list contains the usual, family, friends, health but this year we have some extra things to feel thankful about. It's been a rough year but it looks like it's going to turn out ok after all.
Enjoy food and family.

Can't I just clap my hands and bring them back?
Wait, that only works for fairies, right?**
I was reading over at Mac's about the Save an Elf campaign. I am left with nothing but headshaking disbelief. This is the spirit of the season? This is joyous goodwill? This is what we want to embrace?
I love me an elf as much as the next person but I will say whatever I want, whenever I want this holiday season. (Hmmm. It's a holiday season...) Sometimes it might be Joyous Yule. Sometimes Joyeux Noel. Sometimes Felice Navidad. Sometimes Blessed Solstice. Or Happy Festivus. But I am not going to be offended if you wish me any greeting in the spirit of the season, even if you are a mean-spirited, elf killer that wishes me Happy Holidays.
Can this get more ridiculous? If it is such a spiritual holiday to you, have at it, celebrate, enjoy the meaning of the holidays and stop forcing your beliefs on everyone else. Happy Holidays isn't war on anyone, it's inclusive and comes from "holy days" so really, don't you win anyway? Do people really stop shopping at stores that wish you Happy Holidays? Are the stores actually enforcing particular greetings? Aren't we missing the point that it's the commercial, gift giving, secular part of the season that is being attacked for not wishing people Merry Christmas?
It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more? It's a classic. Read it. Watch it.
Happy Holidays. (Sorry elf guys, it had to be done.)

I know you're stunned
and it's a bit early for me, but, I xmas shopped. That's right. Things are being built by the elves and spirited this way as we speak. I am almost efficient and stuff. And, it was for multiple people. Lists are getting crossed off. Look out!
Oh, and half of my xmas cards are done. I know there aren't that many, but this leads me to that dangerous "I'm on top of it" feeling that I will linger in until the week before xmas when I will announce that the holidays are way too stressful and I will not be making homemade anything or shopping any more.
So hooray for now but watch out for later. I'm like that.
To celebrate, Sparky and I just finished off a lovely bottle of Pino Grigio and are going to flop down and watch Heroes.

And the holidays begin
Thanksgiving is less than a week away and I am now officially veggie platter girl and apple pie woman. Easy jobs and I'm not hosting this year so not too much stress.
Yesterday was perfect for walking through Hershey. Lots of chocolate was consumed. The kids went on many rides. I even braved a few. We had my mom and my neices with us so it was a lot of fun. Pictures are coming soon.
And next on the list? Because, you know, packing and closing on the house the week before xmas isn't crazy enough. We are heading to Great Wolf Lodge for our 2nd annual get-away-from-xmas-craziness mini break. Can't wait! (Not thinking about the prospect of bathing suits in December....)

trick or treat
Pictures are up. We had a perfect night, possibly even a bit warm, for trick or treating. We opted to head up our new street and were surprised when we found the whole street lit up and everyone trick or treating, something you don't see around here too often. All the neighbors were out on their porches handing out candy and being social. The leaves were crunching underfoot, kids were laughing and screaming at the scary decorations. Our new house? They were home but the lights were out and there was no candy to be had there. Tsk tsk tsk.
So? How did everyone else do? Good year for trick or treating?

Sadly our local Haunted House wasn't open this year. A local volunteer fireman and his buddies have traditionally turned his entire home into a haunted house. Lines form all the way down the block and all the firemen help out. They've always been great about adjusting the scare to the age group going through. His wife has been threatening for years to shut this down. Can't blame her since hundreds of people tromping through my house would be a scary halloween. I guess this year she won.
Managed to do a full tarot reading after everyone dozed off last night. I usually only do a three card or five card but once a year I do the full reading. No, I'm not going to share. You'll have to do your own ;)

Happy Samhain/ Halloween
One of my two favorite holidays. How can you not love this one? It's fun and simple and relatively stressfree (we aren't going to talk about the costumes I am still sewing!).
I was feeling a bit out of it this year. No Samhain altar, no decorations, feeling too busy to do anything when I realized that just putting those things out would make me feel much, much more like myself.
So....now there are bones, ghosts and ghoulies outside and candles, gourds, and incense inside. Plus pumpkins and candy! It feels much more festive in here.
Even the pups are getting in on the action in their t-shirts. Pictures of everything are coming but it just isn't as spooky on a brilliant, crisp day as it will be later tonight in the dark with the fog machine and sound effects. C'mon over. I've got the good candy;)

i couldn't find the pre-whacked individually wrapped chocolate oranges this year (and they just wouldn't be the same without someone to share them with!) but i did find some--one milk chocolate and one dark chocolate--and the best part? i am the only one who likes dark chocolate in the house! haha.
feeling a little less stressed but still having trouble feeling any tiny bit of christmas spirit. i am hoping that the holiday will show up soon and won't feel like just another thing to check off the list.

counting down
eek! the countdown calendars around the house are getting very near to the day! yule is less than two days away and xmas eve is saturday. saturday!!
trying to make an organized list of what is left to do so that it doesn't seem so overwhelming. i really wanted to be less stressed this year so i could enjoy some baking and singing and general holiday goodness with the boys and my family.
little bits of shopping left, still waiting on a few shipments, haven't even start baking or wrapping and i need to knock out the rest of that paper by wednesday night.
starting to feel the pressure.
but i am going to put on some xmas tunes, finish cleaning the kitchen so we can make cookies this afternoon and fiddle around with my snazzy new 2006 planner ('cause that makes me feel happy and organized!)
keeping my fingers crossed for no strike tomorrow so that we can enjoy the sing-in at lincoln center without hoofing it 30 or so blocks.

oh, and by the way, i haven't mentioned it too much here because it is so very ridiculous, but wish me any variety of seasonal greeting you want to as long as it is meant as a gesture of sharing holiday goodwill. how can anyone be offended by inclusive sharing of the holidays? so i will wish you a merry yule or happy christmas. i might even share with you a wish for happy holidays and you can wish me any seasonal greeting you would like--or none at all--i would be happy to share whatever seasonal customs you would like to share.

feeling a bit like clark griswald
why is it that every year i get these sugary visions of the family all singing christmas carols and decking the halls while we smile laugh?
and yet, every year it goes something like this:
i badger sparky until he drags down the xmas decorations
he complains that we have too much stuff
the kids spend two minutes tearing through the boxes and then disappear for the duration of the project
i stomp around put everything out and make everything look beautiful and then get grumpy that no one is ooh-ing and aah-ing
this afternoon was no exception. we went and got a tree--an adventure that was less painful then usual and resulted in a beautiful frazier fir.
once the decorations were down the kids headed to the playroom for gamecube and bickering and sparky dozed off on the couch only to wake up once in a while and mutter something about "too much stuff."
i was not going to let them suck the holiday spirit out of this task so i finished up, lit the candles (including my little brass candle spinner that is now ting tingling on the table) and put on the xmas tunes.
as if by magic, the sound of xmas carols brings them into the living room to flick off the stereo and turn on the tv.
so, i suggest a holiday movie.
j: "how about jurassic park 3?"
sparky: "no...mom says we have to watch something with a guy in a santa hat, an elf, a reindeer or a snowman."
j: "so. slap a bow on the dinosaurs butt and call it a xmas movie!"
sparky (starting to feel bad because i am getting sad): "ok, ok, how about xmas vacation?"
kids in unison: "oooh! how about vegas vacation??"
all three boys: "yay! vegas vacation! woohoo! it's like xmas vacation!! "
so, i am sitting in my pretty house with the candles lit and the tree still on top of the car watching vegas vacation and drinking eggnog.
yup, it's the holidays!
on edit: the tree is now in and defrosting. it will be decorated tomorrow. don't know what did it. could have been my little speech:
"Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse." (i may have borrowed this from clark himself, but it worked!!)

Oh how I love that speech. I imagine that'll be me down the road, and I can't wait!
Yes, we began our day wtih a child that said No, and what happened after that, then we went to the tree farm, and I was like, I feel a little hypocritical going off on the big family adventure to get the tree when I'm rather upset. They were all over it but it takes me longer to process. The. Shit.
It's pretty. Now that it's over. And they're all gone to bed. ;p
(I think the quote attributed to Seuss is misspelled, btw.)
i have that speech memorized for holiday emergencies!
i hate getting all set to do something fun and then having it implode.
and chel, you get the proofreading award! lol. that's been up there forever and i never noticed. good thing it's not my job to pick up on things like that. oh wait...

I love the Santa blog - and his post about Rudolph is very cute.
I see Rudolph's got his own profile - "No way, 24/7. I get it done in 24/1. The rest of the year, I keep in shape along with Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. And I indulge my love of aviation and Mrs. Claus' chestnuts roasted on an open fire."

because it's the thought that counts
(and i am still procrastinating...)
a little holiday present. let's pretend that you were going to buy me three cds, three movies and three books that you loved this year.
what would they be?
in other words...it's recommendation time! it's like a little free present! they don't have to be newly released--just ones that you have enjoyed this year.
(yes, you. i know you're there lurking.)

okay, so, it makes me cry a little to see you recommending more adventurous for two reasons: 1) it's rilo kiley, whom i love perhaps more than life itself, and 2) god, it's rilo kiley's suckiest cd. yes, suckiest; i love me some jenny lewis, but man does her whinging get old so fast on MA. if you want some REAL rilo kiley, do yourself a favor and buy the execution of all things (amaaaazing) and takeoffs and landings, listen to "the good that won't come out of me," "science and romance," "the execution of all things," "paint's peeling," "a better son/daughter," "wires and waves," and "pictures of success," and THEN you'll have one of your top three cds of the year.
okay, off my rilo kiley soapbox.
okay. cds you must have. MUST:
swimming hour, andrew bird's bowl of fire
the mysterious production of eggs, andrew bird
picaresque, the decemberists
her majesty, the decemberists
castaways and cutouts, the decemberists
o, damien rice
others you may enjoy:
get behind me satan, the white stripes
no one is really beautiful, jude
clap your hands say yeah, clap your hands say yeah
in the aeroplane over the sea, neutral milk hotel
extraordinary machine, fiona apple (the old version, if you can find it)
dirty stay-out, amy miles
love.angel.music.baby, gwen stefani
low down and up, toni price (you'd love her, i think)
okay. that should be it.
lovelovelove
*running over to add to wishlist*
i found rilo kiley - more adventurous by clicking a "listening to" link on some blog somewhere (i can't for the life of me remember where!) but is this is their worst then i am all over checking out others!
i bought decemberists - picaresque a few months back. love it. very jealous that you saw them and i didn't!
thanks for the other recs!!! you know me and we usually agree.
the long commute has made me hungry for new tunes.
you've got lucinda williams, right?
'get right with god' is a great song.
you might like john vanderslice, too.
OH and regina spektor - soviet kitsch. yes. YES.
no! i don't have that.
see? you need to visit. with lots of tunes!
CDs -
Ari Hest - Someone to Tell
Marc Broussard - Carencro
Jason Mraz - Tonight, Not Again (Live CD)
Movies -
Airplane
Tootsie
Everyone Says I Love You
Books -
Mike Lupica - Full Court Press
Paula Maranitz Cohen - Jane Austen in Boca
Stewart O'Nan & Stephen King - Faithful
CDs (Stuff I am reasonably sure came out in the past year, maybe 2...):
Buck 65's: This Right Here is
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: Of Natural History
Busdriver: Fear of a Black Tangent
DVDs (I haven't bought very many of these this year...):
Kids in the Hall Vol.3
Criterion Collection Short Cuts
Ren and Stimpy
Books (I bought even fewer of these, and nothing new terribly new, but here are 3 of them):
Going Postal by T.Pratchett
Extrodinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Dr. C.Mckay
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by R.Heinlein
oh wow I am just passing by...

ha!
i am finished writing xmas cards! thought i would start early since i didn't get them done at all last year. put on the xmas tunes, got some nice warm chai and presto! all done. (ok, except for those people who i don't have a current address for. isn't it a shame that this is the only time of year i notice this??)
so...do you want a card from fabulous "here?" i have a few if anyone's interested in a little card exchange. email me!
off to finish cleaning and make some kind of pot pie out of all the leftovers. we are going to be eating potatoes for weeks!

sneaking out in the night
once sparky got home, j and i snuck out to squeeze in a little gadgety holiday shopping. yay! done with the hard-to-find gadgety goodness and everyone will be eeeee-ing and oooooh-ing xmas morning.
we also managed to replace our video camera with a cute little one that records on dvds and pick up a few xmas cds.
i am absolutely in love with the brian setzer's "dig that crazy christmas"
. what fun!
ok, now that i have hidden all the gifts and made multiple movies of the kids and dog, i am going to call it a night--everyone should sleep snug as a bug in their new comfy pjs!

shopping battles
i don't usually go near stores on black friday but i thought i would chance it this afternoon once the crazies were home sleeping off their shopping injuries and battle wounds.
so i chanced it. and it was awful, frightening, horrifying even.
and was it the crowds? no.
traffic? no.
mean spirited people? nope.
it was whining kids. and i would love to blame someone else's ill-behaved monsters but i am afraid these were mine. crowds i can fight but dragging two fun-sucking whiners around...that would be like having my in-laws over for the holidays. nope. just not going to do it...again.
the up side to this is that i spent less, came home and shopped online, had more pie and watched Christmas with the Simpsons
(hey, nothing but the classics here. lol)
c is getting a cold--sniffles, sore throat, fever, whining, the works--so we are just hoping to get through it without sharing.

i've been really good
i haven't broken out the christmas music yet.** but as soon as santa makes his way down the parade route***...it's christmas music time! and christmas movies!
what are the first ones you reach for every year?
my first cd is harry connick jr's - when my heart finds christmas
i have about 40 or so xmas cds but i always go to this one first.
and then...
while we are all lolling on the couch in after-turkey stupors we put in the first xmas dvd of the season.
no doubts here:
christmas vacation
how about you? what's first?
**practicing xmas music doesn't count. i have a few holiday concerts coming up and christmas carolling to do...that's a whole different thing. although, i have to admit that the arrangement of greensleeves that we played monday night made the hair on my arms stand up--full middle brass and beautiful counterpoint melodies--it sounded a whole lot like christmas. but it was just practice so it still doesn't count ;)
***there is only one real parade on thanksgiving and it's the macy's thanksgiving day parade in nyc. there will be no mummers! *shudder*
i swear i suffer from mummerphobia. have you seen them??

I'm a big fan of Harry as well. I also like the NBC compilation CD from Target, I think it's the pop one. Other than that, all the traditional stuff.
And oh yes, I've watched Christmas Vacation twice already! Can't go a year without it. Also, A Christmas Story, and my new favorite, Surviving Christmas. 'Tis the Season!
Definitely Christmas Vacation. I love Harry, but don't have that CD.

isn't turkey enough?
i am having 16 people here for thanksgiving. 16 people!!
i have what woud be described in realtors terms as a "cozy" house. small. it's friggin' small.
i don't mind that we will be setting up a table in the living room to create a temporary dining room. i don't even mind cooking. in fact, i like that part.
but i am going to have to clean. really clean. company clean. and because my living room will be serving as a dining room, i will have to clean the playroom (which will now be serving as the living room) and holy hannah! people are going to be in my kitchen.
they will not find my science project of a fridge either funny or particularly appetizing. and my cabinets? i am afraid if one of my cousins tries to get something out they will be sucked into the mess and never return. we could save that for an after dinner treat, yes?
so i am hoping that i get struck with some kind of cleaning enthusiasm, a little burst of OCD would help.
house elves, i need house elves.
then again, i have some really fond memories from thanksgivings in the house i grew up in, which was also "cozy."
i remember being very small and hiding with my sister underneath the folding tables set up in the living room. my hair was already brushed vigorously and pulled into two tight pigtails with colored yarn bows, my legs were itchy from my tights that were twisted and crinkled at the ankle, my dress shoes were all buckled and my new corduroy jumper matched my sister's.
our fort underneath the table glowed from the sun shining through the plastic-backed paper tablecloth, the turkeys and leaves changing the light into colored patterns on the sculpted carpet.
we brought our stuffed animals and matchbox cars underneath with us--played until it was time to watch the parade. we grabbed some pillows and tucked the tablecloth out of the way so we could watch the floats and bands and balloons from our new fort. and all that time we could smell dinner cooking and the smell of the freshly scrubbed house and we could sneak the good candy out of the candy dish while mom was getting on her "dress clothes."
ok, so maybe getting everything clean, while stressful, will be worth it. and maybe having a small house is actually cozy. and maybe i will set up the table so the boys can hide underneath and watch the parade. and maybe i won't yell when i catch them sneaking the candy.

16??? I so have to see pictures...you have to share pictures!! Personally, I'm having eight (which is a lot for me...remember, I'm the one who has to dust off the stove occasionally)? hahaha Relax, it will be fine...just give everything a swipe, toss a pot of water with cinammon oil and vanilla in it and the house will smell fantastic!
that's the plan. light candles and dim the lights. :-)
Hey! As a kid I used to create "camp" and play with my Matchboxes under the diningroom table. Aren't we imaginitive! That was fu to read about. I have an open invitation to visit my sister in NC for Turkey day and may do it.

I'm incredibly irritated that I have to work 2:30-11 tonight. I think I've closed the past three Halloween nights, SO not fair! Hopefully it'll go quick and we'll get out early. Have a good one!
Though this company allows for dressing up, not my gig. So, assuming I get out on time and she's feeling up to it, we'll be driving to someplace with houses and taking V around in her fairy princess outfit for her first real Halloween experience.

family traditions that are "abby something....abby normal"
it's that time of year again. time to roll out the scary movies. i love that my oldest loves a good scary movie just like me. it's good to have someone to watch with. i wish there were more that were ok for him to watch, but as he gets older we get to add to the list.
but first, something not so scary...a classic....
that's right, it's time for young frankenstein
my kids know it by heart! lol. makes a mom proud.

I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!! It's one of my totally faves!
One hilarious movie - we studied it in 6th Form (um...high school, 16 turning 17) and we had to act out scenes in front of class!
Ah, memories...
Good choice! It's time for us to break out Nightmare Before Christmas

Merry Beltane!
Fun day at my sister's today. Good to spend some time relaxing with family.
Today is Beltane/May Day. By this time last year I was planting and planning for gardens. This year has been so chaotic getting through end of semester stress and graduation prep and getting ready for kzoo that I just haven't been out there much yet. I am planning on getting out there in the next few weeks and getting my herb garden going. This year I have a better idea of what will and definitely will not grow.
Looking to add some dill, a bay tree, St. John's Wart, and a new rosemary plant (since I killed last years. who knew they had to come in??) So hopefully there will be some good summer cooking.
Started packing today and realized that I really only have two days to pack and get this place in shape to be run by hubby for five days. Just the boys for five days.....bwaahhahahaha.
damn, they love me when I get home!!

I spent May Day inside recouping from vacation. Completely forgot that it was May Day.
blessed beltaine!
i planted some st. johns wort last year, late summer and it came back! i'm famous (infamous?) for turning perennials into annuals (my butterfly bush, snow-in-summer and phlox for example) but the st. johns came back and is actually spreading and growing! i'm so excited. i just hope i can find more of it to plant at our new house... =)

take me out to the ballgame.....
happy opening day!! that's a holiday around here.
and how will i be celebrating? let's start with my morning so far, shall we?
- oversleep because while changing the time i somehow shut off the alarm
- run around screaming at kids
- discover youngest has talent of barking like a seal while running a fever
- step in cat barf on the steps
- listen to husband's speech about how what he does is so much more important and can't be changed confirming my fear that i am screwed and about to miss an exam at 9:10
- fight some more with oldest who is suffering time change syndrome
- get to miss class (see above re: sick kid) and watch opening day game!
hey! at least there's an upside!
so, whoever you root for, enjoy opening day. buy me some peanuts and cracker jack....
on edit: let's just say that you stressed all morning to find a solution to a sick kid problem and when you finally found one your professor arrived 10 minutes late to class to announce that she didn't get a chance to copy the test yet and asked you to wait and then returned and still didn't have copies and spent another 15 minutes rambling about nothing when you knew she was going to let you go and wasted all of your morning forcing you to come home and rant in long run-on sentences...that would make you crazy, yes? just checking.

A Little Bit of Spring

These are from last year in the Springtime. Crocus are one of my favorite flowers. The Equinox was rainy and dreary this year. We spent most of it cleaning and lounging about watching Extreme Home Makeover reruns.
The tell-tale signs of Spring were here today, however, as the hubby and I yelled and cheered and high-fived our way through the Mets comeback, walk-off homerun. Nothing like the crack of a bat to ring in the Spring.
Happy Ostara to everyone who celebrates. Enjoy the 1st day of Spring. I, for one, am looking forward to milder days and afternoons of procrastinating in the park instead of doing papers.

Now the blog is wearing green...kind of. I am not sure how Irish the kiwi is (ha!) but it is green so consider it in the spirit of the day. Plus it looks bright and springy and it makes me smile.
I ordered my new toy from dell this morning. Happy St. Patrick's Day to me!
Off to the store to buy lots of Irish food to boil in a pot. Oooh, and maybe stop off for a shamrock shake.

Happy BDay to your hubby!!!!!! My sister's Bday was yesterday...she turned 31, I'm still in my 20's....that whole 'baby of the family' thing is REALLY paying off now! ;-)
Happy Birthday to Michelle's Hubby!
Happy Birthday to your husband. Tell him that he has my total sympathy with the Christmas / birthday one big blur thing. I should know as it is my birthday today too!
Happy Birth - Day to you - -
Happy Birth - Day to you - -
Happy Birth - Dear son-in-law
Happy Birth - Day to you - - - and many moooooorrreeeeeeee!!!! - -
- can't wait until you're as old as I am .......... ;~)
Happy birthday and sympathies to a fellow sufferer-my birthday is Christmas Eve.
I highly recommend the June Half-Birthday Celebration (TM) as a one way to combat that sneaking feeling that you've really been ripped off by the birthday gods.

music to my ears
home again home again jiggety jig.
after a quick visit with the inlaws where we all hung out with the dogs on the bed...ah, the joys of the holidays...
we are home relaxing and c is rocking out on the guitar. he is very excited about going out tomorrow with his xmas money and getting a pick and a book. i think he just likes walking around with the guitar strapped to him. he told me "dad says 'chicks like guys who play guitar'" lol.
j is in his room watching the reflection of the water on the walls from his aquarium. he says he is never coming out. hopefully the tank will settle soon and he can have his fish. although he seems happy just staring at the water. quiet? happy? in his room? looks like that was a good present!
so we are off to snug in some jammies, far from the thought of crack ho niece, and watch a movie by the light of the tree.

Tonight, just after midnight is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. Ever wonder why we bring all those beautiful greens inside the house?
here's an interesting bit from the history channel on the history of the christmas tree.
There are some other interesting pieces there about different customs around the world. Tonight and tomorrow I will enjoy a quiet no stress tradition. No gifts, no pressure. A little eggnog, a little music, the lighting of the Yule log.
Enjoy!
Merry Merry Yule!!

I have to go shopping today so I think it's only fair that you must go shopping too! ;)
Why could you not do both?
I could never do both because I cannot bake anything...but I am certain that YOU can do both.

leaving crumbs much too small for the other who's mouses
thank you radio netscape for letting me wake up to boris karloff reading "how the grinch stole christmas"
and yes, i know it word for word, the question is why don't you? lol
"poo poo to the who's he was grinchily humming, they're finding out now that no christmas is coming. they're just waking up, i know just what they'll do, their mouths will hang open minute or two then the whos down in whoville will all cry boo-hoo"
"every who down in whoville the tall and the small was singing without any present at all. he hadn't stopped christmas for coming, it came, it came just the same. and the grinch with his grinch feet ice cold in the snow stood puzzling and puzzling, "how could this be so? it came without presents, it came without tags, it came without packages, boxes and bags. he puzzled and puzzed 'til his puzzler was sore, then the grinch thought of something he hadn't before. 'maybe christmas,' he thought, 'doesn't come from a store. maybe christmas, perhaps...means a little bit more.'"
that means i don't have to fight the crowds for shopping, right?
"christmas day is in our grasps as long as we have hands to clasp. christmas day will always be just as long as we have we."
i do have a whoville skin over there on the list if anyone is inspired.

Thanks, I needed that. I'm hoping that eventually "the spirit" will hit, but in the mean time, this'll have to do.
...and I put up the Grinch skin days ago. Any little bit helps.
"I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a holiday to accentuate it..."
Lovin' the Whoville skin and the Grinch quotes! I personally found the Grinch movie blasphemous..or something! :) Give me the original any day! Merry Christmas!
Love your blog!

turkey deja-vu
so i am all set up for our mini turkey day here. we were too bummed about the lack of turkey to pick at so we are cooking one up this afternoon. by we, of course, i do not mean the same "we" that decided we don't need a new car.
all of this seemed like a good idea until i spent last night up sick all night. but once that turkey is thawed, well, it's turkey day and that's that.
news on the car front: hubby is out pricing dvd systems to install. why? why would he do that if he wasn't sure we wanted the car? good question. i will ask him, repeatedly, when he gets home.
why is it that i always think i am going to get oodles of work done over this break? have i learned nothing. eat, sleep, laundry. that's pretty much the plan with a holiday movie or two thrown in for good measure.

Enjoy your turkey ~ don't forget the pickles!
hi doll:
i hope you had a nice turkey with your wing of the family. [rim shot] we hosted some 27 persons, with no disasters. i learned i prefer frozen, commercial preservative-laden turkeys to the fresh.
love this holiday skin, btw.
First off, awesome new background! Even the comments section is beautiful!! Turkey...mmmm...love turkey. As to why hubby is pricing DVD players? Because men love to get one step ahead of themselves, even when the last step is possibly quicksand. Yup, that's men!

i love a parade
oh yes, i am a parade gal. marching bands, showtunes, giant balloons being wrangled in the wind by frightened retail employees....i am in heaven.
i have fond memories of watching the parade every year while my mom was cooking for the holiday. oh, and there is only one parade the macy's thanksgiving day parade
accept no substitutes. bad enough the mummer's will be slithering into town in the near future. mummers. *shudders*
so i am enjoying the pre-parade broadway performances. brooke shields? was anyone else stunned that she actually looked great? great voice, nice job, i was impressed.
back to the kitchen. appears one of the hazards of this growing up thing is that now i am the mom. don't worry, i am tivo-ing the parade so i can pause it and zip through the commercials.
Happy Thanksgiving!! Here's to eating til you pass out from the turkey drug and a weekend full of leftovers!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
I was surprised that Brooke Sheilds actually looked, sounded, and danced like she knew what she was doing...
It's not only retail employees who man the ballons - My company used to sponsor a balloon in the Stamford Thanksgiving Parade, and I manned it three years in a row. It was a lot of fun, and each of us who did it felt a sense of accomplishment in not getting tangled in any traffic lights... ;-) All kidding aside, it would probably be a great subject for one of those corporate team building exercises.
One more thing... I LOVE the new design!
OH MY GOODNESS! I LOVE the new skin! You are so cool. And, also, thanks for stopping by my place today. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours....
I watched Brooke in awe - I had to keep reminding myself it was HER! That might almost be worth seeing now!
We watched the parade while making turkeys (cardstock turkey bodies and colored feathers...crafty bunch, are we!). I thought about TiVo, but this is our first holiday with TiVo and it would just be weird to fast forward the parade, ya know? So we watched it live. Maybe next year I can find the courage to TiVo. I'm a sucker for tradition.
I missed Brooke's performance, but I did catch a good portion of the parade this morning. When we lived in the City we'd always go see it in person. I really miss those days.
Hope you have a good Thanksgiving!
Ohhhh...I also love a parade. Well, except when I am in them.
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

still like my captions better. NYAH.
:)
LOVE the new layout, LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! I need to work on mine, but I'm stumped.......Inspiration went out the window this year.
What you forgot to mention is that the REASON your hubby does not pick up the phone - - is because once again he will start feeling SORRY for the poor guy - - and give in and hire him back!
Kathy most definately is amazing, she did the skin on my site too (and have two winter skins in line).
Looks great michelle!
