movies

so i took the boys and went to see timeline. i read this book a few years back. quick read. one day. i don't remember all the details from the book except that it was entertaining and i remember thinking at the time that it would make a good movie.

did they make a good movie? yes...and no. it was fun and they kept the main idea of it even if they muddied it a bit.

but there was something that really irked me and i don't remember if it was in the book or not. when they go back in time, they bring someone with them that speaks french because they will be going to the hundred years war...france, england...
so they considered language. these presumably well-educated men considered language...
but it never occured to them that in friggin 1397 people would not be speaking present day english?? middle english folks. almost a hundred years before chaucer! this is how i am going to spend the better part of my next ten years. studying middle english. and trust me. they would have needed some help. and the french guy?? unless he spoke middle french he would have been in the same boat.

ok, besides that it was fun in the same way the book was. the foreshadowing is heavy-handed and the plot is little more than a fun romp. but sometimes that is just what you need.

the cast was great though. some eye candy, Paul Walker (Fast and the Furious), a wonderful accent (and not too hard on the eyes) Gerard Butler (Reign of Fire), and a personal favorite scottish guy, Billy Connolly.

hmmm. mixed review i guess. it won't win any awards, but if you like the time period, medieval battle scenes, a little time travel science fiction, and men with accents, it was fun.
