A Race Like No Other: 26.2 Miles Through The Streets Of New York by Liz Robbins

I read Liz Robbins' A Race Like No Other; 26.2 Miles Through The Streets of New York as part of my mental preparation for running in November's New York City Marathon (T-minus 233 days!). A Race Like No Other is the story of the New York City Marathon told two ways simultaneously - not only is it a mile-by-mile description of the Marathon course, but it also tells the stories of many of the participants in the 2007 race. These participants include wheelchair athletes, elite runners, a cancer survivor, a grandmother and a recovering alcoholic. Ms. Robbins uses individual stories to give the reader a broad view of the marathon experience and also sprinkles in tidbits about the race's 40-year history (going back to 1970).

I am not sure that the non-runner would truly understand the meaning of this race and the preparation that goes into running 26.2 miles. But I think that anyone who has ever tied on a pair of running shoes would appreciate just how much work goes into readying oneself for this kind of an event. And for anyone preparing to run a marathon, especially the New York City Marathon, A Race Like No Other should be required reading.
