The Last Cowgirl by Jana Richman
The Last Cowgirl by Jana Richman is the story of a woman who moves from a town in Utah to the rural outskirts at the age of seven in 1962. The story goes back and forth in time from 1962 through her childhood, and in the present time as she returns to her childhood home for the funeral of her brother. It's a detailed story about ranch life, childhood friendships and relationships, and a very dysfunctional family's ability and inability to cope with life's challenges.
In some ways, although I appreciated this book, I never totally got into it. The narrator/protagonist seems emotionally detached from the story and, thus, I was never able to attach to it myself. That said, Richman tells an interesting story with detail and insight. This is an intelligent book, and ultimately it provides a story well told.
