The Dark Queenby Susan Carroll
To start with I would like to say that I am regularly a huge fan of historical fiction. Real historical fiction, like Sunne in Splendor by Sharon K Penman. Where the author takes real events and lightly fictionalizes them to bring us closer to the story. That is how this book is billed. As a historical fiction set in renaissance France. I was a bit disappointed.
That said overall I enjoyed the book. Once I got over the fact that this was mostly fictional to fantasy I was able to change my mind set and enjoy a rich story. The setting is France in the time of Catherine de Medici but most of the story takes place well outside the court of the Dark Queen. It is mostly a romance with a bit of mystery thrown in. The mystery is rather predictable and the romance is fun.
Only in one brief scene does the writer hedge toward trashy novel style and it is kept in check. The characters are well thought out and well developed as the story goes along.
I recommend this for some light easy reading for anyone who enjoys a bit of pagan like fantasy woven into their history. I know my review doesn’t sound great but overall I really enjoyed the book.
